Interview

Voodoo Glow Skulls
01/07/2003 (interview with Frank Casillas)

Please give a brief history of the band, including current line up.

Frank-vox, Eddie-guitar, Jorge-bass, Jerry-drums, Brodie-Trombone, Mason-trumpet.

We started the band in the summer of 1988. Three of us are brothers, and Jerry the drummer is a childhood friend from the neighborhood. Originally, as a four-piece band we started playing local gigs and parties for friends. That quickly escalated to clubs and small tours. We eventually incorporated a horn section to allow us to explore more musical influences. We released our very first CD on Dr. Strange records, and sold over 150,000 copies. That got us noticed by Epitaph, and we released (4) releases with them over a span of 6 years. We released our newest release on Victory Records about 1 year ago.

Discography.

Who Is, This Is - Dr. Strange Rec.
Firme - Epitaph
Baile De Los Locos - Epitaph
Band Geek Mafia - Epitaph
Symbolic - Epitaph
Steady As She Goes - Victory

Your music seems to mix many different sounds, where do you get your insiration from and what other bands do you rate?

We love all genres of music! As kids, we were always really interested in music. Our parents used to play their latin and jazz records on the weekends, and we would be right there listening! As we grew older we started getting introduced to Metal, Punk/Ska, and New Wave. We also took music lessons throughout grade school. We would frequent alot of local concerts as teens. And eventually started playing too. Our biggest influences for what we do are earlier Los Angeles area bands like - Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fishbone,Thelonious Monster, Janes Addiction, Oingo Boingo. We are also heavily influenced by alot of the British Metal bands like Maiden, Priest, and Saxxon. The Ska influence comes from the Two-tone british era. Bands like Madness and The Specials are a major influence.

You have recently toured the UK. What was the reaction like and how did you find the UK audiance compared with the one in the States.

We have actually toured the UK sevral times. We have a well established fan base that is growing. We've been fortunate enough to get on some high profile tours in the past. We recently played the "Game On" festival at the Dome in London. It was a great experience for us! We played the direct support slot before Cypress Hill. We had a positive reception! We cannot wait until we return in November with King Prawn & 4ft. Fingers.

Has any band member played in other bands, if so what?

No, nothing to really speak of.

What is the first gig each member of the band ever went to?

I can only speak for myself.....My first rock concert was AC/DC, the Back in Black tour.

What is punk?

To me, Punk is just another musical style.

Describe the music scene in your area, and what can be done to make it better?

The music scene here is fueled by radio and media. There's an underground scene, but it's pretty much non-existent.

In the 80's and early 90's it was really strong and fun to be a part of. But now, it just stinks! There are a few hotspots here and there. But I don't think that the So. Cal scene can be saved. Still, there are alot of shows happening! But it's all driven by big corporate promoters that hike up ticket prices and water everything down.

Plans, gigs and releases planned for 2003.

We've been on tour for the majority of this year already. We are currently taking 2 months off to write new music and prepare for the studio again. We return to the UK/Europe again for a headlining tour with King Prawn & 4ft. Fingers. Hopefully, we'll have new release in the spring of 04'. It will be released on Victory Records.

Any final comments?
