Interview

The Donnas
09/06/2001

Please give a brief history of the band, including current line up.

We started in eighth grade playing at lunchtime at our middle school. We played for two years as the Electrocutes and other names before we met Darin Rafaelli who started the Donnas with us. For two years we did both bands at the same time and when that became too confusing we merged them together. Now we have the same members as always.

Discography.

The Donnas self-titled
American Teenage Rock n' Roll Machine
Get Skintite
Turn 21
The Electrocutes - Steal Yer Lunch Money

Why did you choose the name The Donnas? And did you deliberately follow a similar format ie all taking the same name to the Ramones?

We rearranged the letters of a McDonalds Happy Meal to make our logo, and we didn't pick up the individual names till later as a joke. i think our names resemble the ramones but are really more like the girls in the movie Heathers.

If you were writing a review about The Donnas, how would you describe the band?

That's a crazy question. i guess Energetic and fun, the kind of show that makes you forget about having to go to work in the morning.

Do you think some of the male audience at gigs are there for the wrong reasons, ie purely because you are all females? If yes, does this piss you off?

It's true that some people aren't at our shows solely to respect our musical talent, but that's not who we're playing to, and it's not like we can keep them out can we?

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you whilst touring?

One time we got trapped on our dressing room and it flooded with water and we had to be rescued by firemen, pinch me i'm dreaming!

What question would you like to be asked in interviews, but you are never asked? And what is your answer?

I wish people were more interested in us as a band rather than as girls in a band i get really sick of trying to explain what it's like being a girl in a band. that's so stupid, what's it like being a girl writer or a guy writer? it is what it is.. i wish people would ask us what's on our rider, and i'd say champagne!!

Plans, gigs and releases planned for 2001.

We are planning a tour to eurpoe in the end of august to do some festivals and then we're back out on the road in september for anothre american tour.

Any final comments?

We have older guys and younger guys and younger girls in our audiences, but where are the women?!!
